Lesions of the Jaw

Pseudocyst · Cysts

It is a general rule that 3D CBCT imaging makes the diagnosis of pathologies faster and easier. When it comes to lesions, 3D CBCT scans can be exceptionally informative and useful.

While cysts are usually noticeable in OPG images, 3D CBCT images come in handy when diagnosing the exact position and dimensions of the cysts, and the impact it might have on the other structures in the region. We have prepared a handful of cases of cysts and apparent cysts which happen to be no cysts at all, which we can use to demonstrate the powerful diagnostic value of 3D CBCT.

The first case is a case of a so-called pseudocyst. The intraoral image showed an unusual shadow in the region of the mandibula. The dentist decided to take a 3D CBCT scan as well as a part of his diagnostic process. And his suspicion was proved right – the cyst was no cyst at all, but a thinned alveolar ridge-reduction of spongiosis of unknown origin.

You can watch the case study here:

As you can see in the video, the 3D CBCT scan confirmed the doctor’s assumption that the shadow in the intraoral image might be something other than a cyst. It was quick and easy to find the affected area and, with the help of clipping, look at the thinning of the bone.

3D CBCT image also allowed for a measurement of the bone thickness to be taken, which could potentially be helpful information.

The cases of pseudocysts and the diagnosis of shadows in bones are not the only ones where 3D CBCT technology is a big advantage. There is a big benefit from the 3D CBCT scans in the diagnosis and treatment of cysts as well.

We have explored two cases of cysts in our recent Case Study – a radicular cyst and a follicular cyst respectively. Both cysts can be seen in their OPG images, but only the 3D CBCT scans can truly showcase how severe the condition is thanks to the plastic view of the area.

You can explore the cases together with us in a Case Study video, where we utilize the 3D CBCT possibilities in order to understand all the connections between structures, bone damage, and true size of the cysts.

As you can see, 3D CBCT image provides the edge over 2D OPG images thanks to better and more detailed overview of all situations. It makes diagnostics and treatment faster and easier for you, and simpler and more understandable for your patients.
